Hi! I’m Rachel. I’m a writer, photographer, teacher, and world traveler. At the moment I am backpacking around the world with my new husband as I work on an independent writing and research project about marriage around the globe.

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”   ~Henry David Thoreau

Deliberate Wanderer is a website committed to sharing travel experiences, stories, and tips about how to maximize cultural immersion. The name comes from two of my favorite quotes from Tolkien and Thoreau, who inspire me to travel and live purposefully and deeply.

I studied anthropology and English for my undergraduate degree, where I did field work and writing projects in Ghana and India, fueling a passion for deep, culturally immersive travel. My specialties include fiction, creative nonfiction (especially travel essays), and portrait photography.

I’ve recently finished a teaching commitment with Teach for America and a master’s degree Boston University in education. I now work at HarvardX as a content developer for different MOOCs. My true passion is for learning outside of the classroom and all over the world.
